Twist of Gold PowToon

Last term we read a book called Twist of Gold. It is about 2 young children Annie and Sean O'brien. Who's mother is dying of starvation from the potato shortage. We used PowToon to make a Twist of Gold book report. It was really fun. we started off by making the starting page. We changed the character, background, music and props. Then we had to write a summary from the book in our own words on two slides. Then we created an ending page this was one of my favourite bits. Here is my PowToon.

Samoan art

In term 3 for art on Tuesday in the afternoon we have been making Siapo cloths. We sketched a drawing of something Samoan. I did a jellyfish because when I think of Samoa I think of the sea. After we did that we glued string onto the drawing with lots of glue and I mean lots. This we did over a couple of days. After we did that we got a square piece of paper put it over our art and got a colour of crayon that we wanted. We then pushed the crayon along the art and it made our art show up on the piece of paper. The last thing we did was get a roller and dipped it in ink, I chose blue. We rolled the ink all over the art then carefully placed another piece of paper over the top. Then got a clean roller and rolled it over the  paper again and again. Then we carefully peeled back the paper to let it dry. Our teacher then hung them up on display here is a photo of mine.

Athletics 2018

This year for athletics we did it across 3 days. On the first day back from the holidays the year sixes did high jump and discus.

The high jump winners jumped 1.16m.

Here is a photo of me on the podium for coming 3rd in discus.

On Friday we did long jump and shot put. I came 2nd with 3.55m. Ava won with 3.71m. That's really long. Here is a photo of us on the podium.

Next we did shot put I only got 4 metres on that so I didn't get a place.

The following week on Monday we did the track events. First the year 6's did sprints and the year 5's did long distance. We first did the sprint heats only the first person in each heat went through to the finals. I came first in both my heats. The finals were more intense because there were faster runners. I like 80 metres better because I need a little extra at the end. Here are some photos of us on the podium for sprints. I won both the 50m and 80m finals.

Lastly we did long distance which is 1000 m. This event is my least favourite. I think I came in the top 10 but I'm not completely sure.

I made the zone team and they are in one week. I love athletics! It is awesome.

Refugee Writing

This term for writing we have been recreating some true stories of people's lives. First we watched a short clip of someone's life then we could rewrite a small section as a narrative, write letters between Manuk and his Father, write the next scene in the film, write a description of the city and about life in Korea in 1951 or write some diary entries pretending you are Manuk.

This is the first story of a little boy named Manuk that lives in Korea and his dad has gone to war. This is the first letter from Manuk to dad.

Dear dad

I hope your having a good time at war. I miss you terribly. Mum leaves the house really early so I mostly have to fend for myself. But she does leave a note every now and then. I've made a collection of toys out of metal from a plane that crashed into a house and I've been using the metal from that. Please end the war daddy.

The next story is of a girl named Julianne from Zimbabwe. I did diary entries for this one. Here is a short snippet.

6/02/06
Dear diary

Hi my name is Juliane my mum just got me this new diary. I was so excited. It is really sparkly with stories in the back. I’m only three by the way. My mum helps me write in this diary since I am only three and I don’t know how to write or spell yet. I live on a big farm with lots of animals like my chickens, goats and sheep. I love living on a big farm there’s lots of space to run around. BYE!

9/04/08
Dear diary

It’s Juliane. Sorry I haven’t wrote in you for a long time. Some people took my mum and tried to kill her. But I know she’s out there somewhere. But it has been an excruciating time not living with a mother. I live in an orphanage now it’s very lonely. I only have you. I’ve learnt how to read and write now. I also haven’t had food for a week I’ve had to survive on grimy snail water, I’m desperate.

12/05/09
Dear diary

Guess who it is. It’s Juliane how’s it going? I’m not great, thanks for asking. I’m in the back of a dusty lorry with I think about 200 hundred other people and I’m the smallest, I’m up to most of their knees. I think they're trying to smuggle us out of the country. I’m around six now my birthday was a couple days ago it was extremely lonely. What who’s that? There’s someone out the window screaming my name crying……………..bye.

This last story is of a girl named Ruth from Eritrea in East Africa. Here is a short snippet of it since my story was so long.

Hi my names Ruth I’m 14 years old. My mum has sent me to get the water from the river which is 3 hours away from our village, I have to walk there too. It’s even harder to walk back because I have to carry the water with me but at least I can have a drink when I’m there.

From my house you can see the mountains made of stone with the pretty blue sky and the beautiful brown grass. My family and I live in a small village 2 hours away from a school so I have to walk. I have six brothers and two sisters I’m the one in the middle. When I’m not at school I help my mum on the farm. My dad is in the military he left 5 years ago, we don’t know where he is. In Eritrea when your a 14 year old girl you either have to get married to someone you don’t know or go to the military, I don’t want to do either. So I’m going to run away.

I am leaving at 4:00am in the morning I’m not taking anything with me just the clothes on my back because it would be too much to carry. I’m not going to say goodbye because I know my mum will go ballistic. I have just walked for 2 days to Ethiopia. I am now walking through the forest and I can hear hyenas. I’m really nervous I think I’m just going to hide under the trees for a while.

Leave in the comments what your favourite story was of mine.

The Journey 2018.

This term my school has been making costumes, choreographing dances and practising for our school production. Our production is called The Journey. This year each class has a different country my class's country was Egypt. Amanda-Lexi's mum came in each week to choreograph our dance and help us practise it.  We had different characters from Egypt, I was a Cleopatra we also had pharaohs, mummies, cats and a king. Then we started making costumes for these characters. The school needed to put an extended stage on our normal stage so that we had more space. We had a dress rehearsal without the extended stage so it was a little difficult to practise. We also had to keep restarting because we kept messing up.

This is a photo of me

Here are some pictures of us in the evening performances.

Leave in the comments if you have done a production.

AVAILLL activities

Over the last 3 weeks my class has been doing AVAILLL. AVAILLL is  where you watch a movie with the subtitles up and do some activities on it. Here are some activities we have done.

We have done the last word which is where we  read the subtitles and our teacher will stop the movie randomly when the subtitles disappear then you write the last word you saw.

We have also done an activity called match the meaning. That is where we have a word on a piece of paper and then our teacher will stop the movie on the subtitles and we have to find the word that means the same as the word on the piece of paper. For example break means the same as shatter.

One of the other activities we have done is unscramble it. In this activity you have a jumbled up word that word will then be unscrambled in the subtitles. Then our teacher will pause the movie then we have to find the word that is unscrambled. But if the letter string has a capital letter we have to use that capital letter in the unscrambled word.

This last one is called read it see it. In this one our teacher will read out a sentence or paragraph about the movie. Then the first thing that pops into our head we have to draw.

I hope you liked this blog post please leave a comment saying what activity you would like to try the most or if you have tried them, tell me which one is your favourite.

Thanks Rhiannon

Artwork from 2018

For this Blog post I am going to be sharing with you five different pieces of artwork that I have been working on through out this year. I hope you like them.

This first piece of artwork is my name art. I created this by folding a piece of paper in half and I wrote my name on one side of the paper. Then I went up to the window and copied it onto the other half of paper. After that I went over my name on both sides with vivid. Then added cool designs this is how mine turned out.

This piece of artwork is my koru art. The giant pink koru is me and all the other korus are my family. I created this by designing how I wanted my Korus in my art book. Then I drew on my Korus with pencil first then I coloured in all the Korus with pastels. After that I used a black pastel and outlined all the Korus. Lastly I dyed the background I dyed mine red. This is how it turned out.

This is my camp cube the reason it is called a camp cube is because it has writing on it about when my class went to camp.
I created this by having a template of a cube then cutting out my writing and putting some in each box then I designed all the squares. After that I taped string on to one of the squares. Then I glued all the tabs together. This is how mine turned out.

This is my Lego person that I made with paper. First I drew my Lego person then I designed what I was going to draw on it. After that I coloured in my Lego person. I decided to draw my hand stand shirt on my shirt because I like gymnastics. This is what it looks like.

This last piece of art is my korowai which is my mihi but in drawings. This is the outside of my korowai. I used pastels to make the design. I decided to keep my design really simple. this is how it turned out.

What was your favourite piece of art work that I have created?
Maybe you could make your own?

Thanks Rhiannon

Wainui Heights Camp

On the first day of Term 2 after the April holidays from the 30th of April to the 2nd of May I went on camp with the Year Six children from my class and Room 20 to YMCA Wainui Heights. Some of the things we did were kayaking, abseiling, raft building and we had a camp fire. My highlight from camp was singing all the songs around the camp fire and kayaking. Here are two pieces of writing about camp.

Remember When

Remember When.... I went kayaking and I got really wet because water kept seeping into my kayak because of the little holes in it.

Remember When… we went raft building and not a lot of people knew how to tie knots as we had never done it before.

That was my 2018 camp to Wainui Heights.

Remember When… I went abseiling and I went up really fast since I love to climb and I’m not afraid of heights.

Remember When… we did the self led activity and we were in a bush and Liam slid down the mud when he was climbing up the hill.

That was my 2018 camp to Wainui Heights.

Remember When… we were at the campfire singing songs until it was nearly 8:00 pm, then we had to leave.

Do you Remember When… we were on the bus on the way home and lots of people fell asleep although it was bumpy.

That was my 2018 camp to Wainui Heights.

--------------------------------------------------------
Camp Challenge
I heard...
The waves slowly creeping towards the shore as we were talking about safety issues.

I heard...
Lots of paddles hitting the water as we were following Matthias around the corner.

I saw...
Everyone slowly getting the hang of things as they glided through the water.

I felt...
The cold icy water trickling down the paddle onto my already freezing hands.

I felt...
My arms becoming exhausted as we were coming to the end of the session.

I wondered...
If I would ever catch up with everyone else to get back to shore as I was not that fast.

I wondered...
If I would ever do anything like that again in my life, as I really enjoyed it.

Multiplication Strategies

This term our class has been doing more Problem Solving. We were learning how to solve multiplication problems by using different strategies.

On Thursday we used an app on the iPad called Explain Everything. This app is an interactive whiteboard that allows us to collaborate, write, record and share our maths thinking.

My maths mate and I decided to share how we solved the following multiplication problem. We used the strategies of place value and rounding and compensating.

We hope you enjoy our maths tutorial.

Please comment below if you learnt something new from our video.

Storybird Poetry Anthology

This term Jackson’s Studio has been writing lots of different poems. Over the last week we have been publishing our poems on a website called Storybird. On Storybird we turned our poems into a book called Poetry Anthology, because an anthology is a collection of poems.

Here is my book which my haiku, diamante, cinquain, acrostic, my James K Baxter inspired poem and two sense poems. Can you guess which poem is which?

I hope you enjoyed reading my poems. What one was your favourite?

Chapter Chat - There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom

This term we have been part of Chapter Chat, a twitter based book chat. We have read a book called ‘There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom’ which is about a boy called Bradley Chalkers. He is mean to everyone and no one likes him. One day a new kid comes to school (Jeff) and when he's going to see the school counsellor he accidentally goes into the girls bathroom. Bradley never does his homework but he wants a gold star so he did his homework but then he didn't hand it in, he just ripped it up.

Every Friday we went on Twitter with other schools in New Zealand that are also part of Chapter Chat. When we are on Twitter we answered questions in small groups about what we had read in the last week. Each week we also had to complete at least one quality Chapter Chat activity to share on Twitter.

This is one of my activities where I had to create the perfect school lunch I think this is would be an awesome school lunch.

This is my second activity where I created a shirt for Carla the counsellor because she always wears funky shirts.

This is my third activity where I had to create a birthday invitation for Colleen Verigold. Colleen Verigold walked into the boys bathroom later in the story.

What one was your favourite?

Hakiu poem

In Jackson's Studio, as part of our poetry unit for writing we have been learning how to write a haiku poem. A haiku poem is a popular Japanese poem that traditionally has three lines of 5, 7 and 5 syllables.

We took our notebooks into the playground and brainstormed words associated with an object. I chose bark because I thought not many people would do bark and nobody else did.

Next we came inside and composed our haiku poem using a website.

Here is mine, I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks
Rhiannon.

Trash To Treasure Art Work

Trash to treasure art work

READ TO SUCCEED!
Bookshelf - Free images on Pixabay
The motivation for my artwork was my love of books. Reading is basically my second hobbie.
My artwork tells the story of how I thinks it is important to keep on reading because when you read you can learn lots. When you are little you learn to read but when you’re older you read to learn.
So get to it start your reading journey today.

Spencer Park camp thank you letter

At the start of term two I went on school camp I went to Spencer Park. We wrote thank you letters to the parents for coming with us. Here is mine:

Dear A J

Did you enjoy camp as much as I did? My favourite part was the Adrenalin Forest High wire because I love climbing, swinging and hanging. The most challenging part of camp was building the bivouacs because the sticks I put on kept falling off.
What was your favourite part of camp?

My highlight was building the sand dunes because I liked working with the group. I thought our sand dune was the best. Thank you for supporting us.
Here is a poem I wrote about Adrenalin Forest
Rendered Image
I heard
The sound of children yelling hurry up to the people in front because they were taking too long
I heard
The sound of people whizzing down the flying fox
I saw
Kids smiling as they went across the high wire course
I Felt
Nervous but excited at the same time. I felt nervous because I
forgot how to use the clips but excited because I knew what it was like
I Felt
Cold as the winter breeze hit my face
I Wondered
If I was going to be able to go on pathway three b
I Wondered
How many people would finish level one and two

Thank you for coming on camp with us we wouldn’t have been able to go on camp without you we really enjoyed having you. Thanks  for cooking all the good food and for being the camp parent of my group.

From
Rhiannon

I loved camp
do you go on school camps or camping trips with family?
hope you enjoyed this blog post.

Zentangle Crazy Hair Art

Hi everybody this is my post this week I hope you enjoy it. The past few weeks we have been doing zentangle crazy hair this is what mine looks like.

Here are some instructions to tell you how I created this art masterpiece.

Instructions
1: First some people took photos of us then the teacher printed them out.
2: Next we glued our face to some paper then we drew our hair.
3: After that we drew zentangle patterns inside our hair
4: Then we coloured our hair in with coloured sharpie pens, then we  drew the background
5:  After that we coloured our background colour I chose orange to bring out the blue.

I hope you enjoyed.  If you have done zentangle art please comment and share it with me.💜

Freak The Mighty Google Drawing

Have you read Freak the Mighty? We are this term. Here is a google drawing to show you what has happened so far.
Hope you enjoy this blog post 💖

Kevin is physically disable. He becomes friendly with Maxwell who is dyslexic and together they go on quests together. We can't wait to watch the movie and see the differences between the movie and the book.

Problem Solving - Home Learning

Last week room 19 did some subtraction problem solving with our maths mates. These are some of the strategies I used for this question
Rhiannon had $52.00 in her bank account. Mum borrowed some money. Rhiannon had $48.00 left in her bank account. How much money did mum borrow?

The question was 52 - ☐ = 48
52 - 2 = 50   50 - 2 = 48
2 + 2 = 4
52 - 4 = 48

This is my reversibility strategy
48 + ☐ = 52
48 + 2  = 50 + 2 = 52   2 + 2 = 4
48 + 4 = 52

This is another strategy
52 - 48 = ☐
52 - 2 = 50   50 - 6 = 44
44 - 40 = 4
52 - 48 = 4

I hoped you learned something from me today.
If you have any other strategies please share them with me by commenting. I hope you enjoyed this blog post.📖

Stepping Into The Shoes of James K Baxter

Room 19 stepped into the shoes of James K Baxter to write a poem
We used his model and made it our own. This is mine:

MY BEDROOM

My bedroom was usual enough; it had a bed that was

Like a couch , a green school desk

That I did homework on, a bookshelf filled with my

favourite chapter books, a dresser

And a night -stand

That I piled all my precious things on

I did basically everything in my room;  homework,

gymnastics skills I needed to practise,

Slept peacefully in my nice warm bed covered with a

minion duvet and lots of pillows.

I did what girls do - watched videos on my pink bean

bag. Learning on my chromebook

Doing Nothing Important .

Rhiannon March
Success Criteria:
“I will know when I am successful when I have…”
  • Selected a place that is personally significant
I chose my bedroom because I feel safe because  I  am around my family

I am poem

I Am
I am good at gymnastics
I wonder if I am going to make the Olympics
I hear the squeaking of the bar as people go round it
I see people doing tumbling trick flicks
I want  to have gym equipment at home
I am good at gymnastics

I pretend to be a famous gymnast sometimes
I feel excited when I get a new skill
I touch the mats with my hands as I do a cartwheel
I worry about moving up a level on a gym exam
I cry  sometimes if I don’t move up a level
I am good at gymnastics

I understand  some skills are harder than others
I say yay if I get a new skill
I dream of being a famous gymnast
I try to do my best at all the skills
I hope I can do competitive gymnastics
I am good at gymnastics
